What a fantastic end to the 2005 season - Beautiful weather and some wonderful fish. Twenty-one tyee in 3 days and lots of Chinook released - it seemed like July not September! Frank Glassner's 42.5 lb spring topped the trip and the big released Chinook was Shelley Bancroft's 38 lb beauty.
It is with a bit of sadness that we close up The Clubhouse for another year, but with so many of you planning on coming back to visit us next year, we're already looking forward to 2006!

The Chinooks and Coho are presenting good fishing between Cohoe and Andrews Points only slowing when our "resident" Orcas show up. This pod of about 70 whales has been circumnavigating the Queen Charlottes this whole summer, appearing at Langara Island every 10 to 14 days. Even the most ardent fisherman can't help admire their beauty and grace. The El Nino type waters around Langara (6-8(F above average) has seen some unusual fish appear over the past few weeks. On August 29th, Mike Brancroft landed only the second Opah (Moonfish) in Clubhouse history. His 55 LB beauty (it truly is a beautiful fish) looks exactly like it's larger brother, which hangs in the Clubhouse Lounge. Mike and his wife Shelley both caught and released 41 LB kings while 18 others joined The Clubhouse Tyee Club.
Better sized Springs combined with plentiful Coho are appearing as September arrives!

With September just around the corner, we are continuing to see an increase in the average size of Springs and Coho. Clendon Stewart # 5’s and #6’s are working well (both chrome and 50/50 chrome/brass) although cut and plug herring is showing very good results. The west side of the island keeps producing good size halibut and the old stand by, Cohoe Point, has sprung back to life with it’s delivery of all five Pacific salmon species. Good size Coho – 12 to 16 lbs – are being steadily found, although the recent splurge of Sockeye has dwindled.

These past two trips showed some very interesting results. A new run of Chinook brought in some heavier fish along with an abundance of Sockeye.
Sockeye don't commonly visit these waters and their appearance has created quite a stir. Cohoe Point and Dibrell Bay, along with Gunia Point to Pillar Rock are the places to be when fishing Langara Island. Cut and Plug Herring is working well for Chinook and Coho, while anything red brings in Sockeye.
Big Halibut continue to show Big Results for Clubhouse members this season.
Earlier this year, on July 11th, young Greyson Nelson brought in his 240 lb halibut, surpassing Mark Kellett's two-year-old record by 35 lb. On August 16th, Al Shankle's 246 lb hali set a new mark - one that everyone felt was bound to stand for years. Mike Murphy wasn't a believer though. Just 3 days later, he and guide Gerry Ayson hauled their 296 lb monster onto The Clubhouse scales, setting once again a new Clubhouse record!

Sunny and warm describes the weather as well as our guest's disposition. Although the Coho have seemingly moved, Chinooks are showing cooperation. Cohoe Point and places north are still taking a back seat to Gunia Point and Boulder Bay and the halibut grounds off Cape Knox are holding strong. Guides have begun using Clendan Stewart 5's and 6's more frequently but herring is still the best producer.

Coho and Chinook continue to present themselves at Gunia Point with average sizes of 7-9 lb and 19-23 lb respectively. Fifteen tyee were retained and three released on this trip - possible indication that some bigger stock is arriving. Good size halibut can be found both southwest and east of Langara, two to six miles off the coast. The summer weather that we've just begun to enjoy has made these off coast trips very enjoyable.

Fishing continues to improve in Langara waters - the average Chinook has increased to 21-24 lb and the number of tyee showing up daily is also encouraging. During this past trip, guests brought in 16 tyee (including Bart Davies' 40, 33 and 31pounders), topped off by David Wane's 44 lb King caught on the day of departure - a great way to say goodbye to The Clubhouse! Cohoe and Gunia Points are definitely the place to be and although Gunia is not as busy, it's where you want to fish for the big ones.

The tyee just keep rolling in! Chinook are back at Cohoe Point after taking a few days off to visit Gunia Point and Boulder Bay. Pink have become plentiful and pose a challenge in getting to the Springs and Coho. Clendan Stewart chrome and 50/50 chrome/brass (# 51/2) proved to be good at bypassing the pinks and getting to the "real" fish. Ottawa's Whit Tucker and his group pulled in 6 tyee almost matching Vancouver's Jason Craik and his group who caught 7 tyee. Rick Pallen on a trip with his father Barney, caught and released a 47 pound Tyee, it was the trip of a lifetime for both of them especially Barney who will be turning 75 this year! Coho Point to Andrews Point is the hot spot but Boulder Bay continues to offer up the bigger tyee.

Another great trip featuring a Queen Charlotte weather bonanza - sun, rain, wind, along with good company and oh yes fish - all you really need for a good fishing trip. Chinook are slowly averaging up (currently 20-24 lbs) and the tyee class is increasing both in weight and numbers. This trip saw 21 tyee caught with five over 40 lbs. The largest catch and release of the trip and in fact of the season, was Michael Campbell's 1873 lb sea lion, which he played for over 10 minutes!

Both the weather and the fishing have improved. The average Spring salmon is about 20 lbs with tyees starting to show more regularly. Good size Halibut continue to show with this trip's largest tipping the scales at 198 lb. While only 10 guests were on the water Sunday morning (departure day), 4 tyee were brought to the dock by 9 am. Boulder Bay is showing some decent fish and Gunia Point, although not always busy, is delivering up some healthy Chinook.

A great group of guests found fishing for Kings a little slow to start this past trip but on day two things improved, culminating in Bob Hermanns’ 44.5 lb Chinook and David Ault’s 197 lb Halibut. Coho continue to be aggressive with some very good sizes coming in. Although herring is the bait of choice, the occasional Chinook has been snagged on Clendon Stewart gold and 50/50 chrome brass. Explorer Bay (between McPherson and Andrews Points) has been a popular spot for the past two weeks but Gunia Point is where the 40+ kings have been found.

Although the weatherman continues to throw some “interesting” weather our way, which certainly makes fishing challenging, this past trip has seen a strong Coho showing. Kings of the 40lb+ size are still somewhat illusive but the 20-25 lb variety is definitely present. Various combinations of cut plug herring and spoons have shown good results at Cohoe point and Andrews Point. Weather for this upcoming week is predicted to improve – maybe we’ll yet see some of that summer weather that was with us all of last season.

Life on Langara Island is as good as ever! Although the Chinook continue to be on the smaller side, halibut have moved in with a vengeance. This past trip, Greyson Nelson from Seattle brought in a 240 lb halibut, surpassing the previous Clubhouse record by 35lb. We've had more halibut over 100 lb to date than we had all of last year. Coho are still in abundance and steadily growing in size. The weather has been typical of the Queen Charlottes - if you don’t like it wait 10 minutes and it will change.

As the salmon continue their journey south, The Clubhouse is seeing a return of better-sized Chinook. Averages are rising to 20 – 25 lb and multiple Tyee are showing up on the docks daily. Coho are abundant and good size, averaging 8 – 10 lb, with the occasional 14+ found on line. Downriggers have sure been helpful in getting past the Coho and into the Springs, especially around Andrews Point. We are all looking forward to see what this next week brings!

Although the weather wasn’t always shining the fish have been cooperating. Average Chinook sizes are increasing with 18 tyee brought to the dock in the last 4 days. Correct that 19 tyee! It’s 9:05 am, Thursday June 30th (day of departure) and Don Mehalko has just hauled his 48 lb King onto the dock – “Hurray up Don, your helicopter is leaving!” Cohoe Point is still top spot on the island and with more Coho showing, some anglers are opting for a change in gear. Clendon Stewart brass/chrome # 6’s seem to be producing results but cut and plug herring are bringing the big ones in.

This trip has seen little change in the average fish size (18-24 lbs) but the number of fish hooking up has increased considerably, producing more excitement out on the water. The weather has been more than acceptable with average daytime temperatures of 18° to 22°C (68° to 72°F) and although a few days of wind have produced some lumpy seas, the Boston Whalers have provided wonderful fishing conditions. The east side of Langara Island is the most productive with herring being the bait of the day. We’re all anticipating what the next few days will bring and what this next run of Chinook look like.

Large quantities of herring continue to surround Langara Island, providing attractive feeding for the current run of Chinook. This massive bait pool is what will bring in the next, more mature run. Average weights are 18-26 lbs with the occasional tyee pocking its nose in. Large halibut are in abundance – each of our past trips have seen at least 3-4 over 100 lbs. The weather has been calm and in the main sunny with average daytime temperatures ranging from 18°C - 22°C (68-72°F). The commercial fleet fishing north of Langara is reporting a stronger catch with bigger sizes showing daily.

The June run of Chinook continues to average 18-25 lbs. The past three days have seen more fish and consequently more angling action. This past week’s catch (June 6-12) has seen a 27% increase in both caught and released Springs over the previous week!! Coho Point and Dibrell Bay are the right areas to fish with some action found between Pillar Bay and Pillar Rock. Some guides are trying Clendon Stewart chrome/brass 5 ½ lures but herring still predominates.
David Hawksworth, Executive Chef with Vancouver’s Restaurant of the Year, “West on Granville”, visited with us and enjoyed the great fishing while we enjoyed David’s fabulous cuisine. A great time for everyone!

Early June and the fishing is good!! Tuesday, Wednesday and today have each shown improvements in both the number and size of Chinooks. Terry Simpson’s 40 pounder caught this morning just before he climbed on board his helicopter bodes well for today’s newly arriving guests!! Cut & plug herring continue to be the guides choice and Cohoe Point through to McPherson Point continues to be the place to fish. Good size Halibut are being found in greater numbers than last season. Brad Badeau’s 95-pound hali topped this trip’s list but there were several in the 50’s and 60’s that made for interesting fishing. Winds this afternoon are picking up from the south; probably assuring that the west side of the island will be popular tomorrow.

Fishing at The Clubhouse continues to present Chinooks averaging 17 to 24 pounds this past week. All areas from McPherson Point to Gunia Point are producing with the sheltered bays of Dibrell and Explorer offering fine relief from the mildly to strong easterly and southeasterly winds. Sunday brought some very good action and this points to some stronger results. Joseph Ecker, from Mobile Alabama, brought in to the delight of his friends, a beautiful 135-pound halibut Saturday. Look forward to getting back to you with my next report June 9th.

Our first guests of the 2005 Season enjoyed great weather and an abundance of wild life. Orcas in the hundreds, hump back whales, sea lions and the occasional dolphin entertained everyone. Spring salmon were relatively small in size (18-24 lbs) but 11 tyees showed up on the dock with the largest scaling out at 39.5lbs. Fishing was somewhat erratic, with Gunia Point, Pillar Bay and Cohoe Point all enjoying sporadic success. Cut and plug herring set out 15 to 18 pulls seemed to deliver the best results for the dedicated fisher. We’re all anticipating this summer’s first big run.
