The ClubHouse Reports

August 24 - 31, 2006

Oops, looks like I forgot to report on the August 24-27 trip, so here goes, a double barrel report. Although the number of tyee dropped ( 20 tyee reported) during the 24th-27th trip, this smaller sized run of Chinook still brought a lot of smiles to a lot of faces. Texas’ Greg Osler’s 40lb king was the trips largest and Greg was not reluctant to share this fact with all who would listen!

The 27th-31st saw the bigger Chinook return, more than doubling (41) the previous trip’s tyee count. Notable tyee mentions go to Chris Gendreau – 50lb, Trevor Ross 45lb, Ray Wallen – 43lb, Dave Snyder – 40lb and Simon Legge – 40lb. As has been the case this entire month, Coho Point and Gunia Point are where most of the fish are being found. A few guides are experimenting with spoons and plugs but herring is still being well received by both coho and chinook.

The weather, although a little cool and overcast for August continues to bring calm seas, all making for very pleasant fishing!

The large and abundant run of Chinook that left us with over 50 tyee on the last trip have moved on. Big, almost football size bait balls – herring, anchovy, and needle fish – still run along the east coast of Langara awaiting the next run of Chinook. The stragglers from this last run still provided 23 tyee to our guests on this trip with Larry Sych’s 42.5 lb king topping the list. Although pinks are certainly present, most guides are finding that cut and plug herring continues to be the choice bait although some success is being found on Superior 50/50 Brass and Chrome #6’s.

The weather, although overcast with occasional showers, has remained calm, providing smooth seas. The outlook is calling for sunnier skies and light winds – all making, for what we hope will be, a very pleasant end to the month of August

I guess we couldn’t keep on beating total Tyee catch numbers trip after trip. You’ll remember that the August 13-17 trip reported 51 tyee and although I’d like to report that we eclipsed that number this trip, I afraid I’m unable – though at 31 Tyee I don’t have to be too apologetic. The catch has slowed slightly and the bigger 40, 50 and 60lb Chinook are not in evidence. Peter Beaupré’s and Nicholas Greatrex’s 37lb Chinook toped the list followed closely by Marcus Chalk’s 36 pounder. Pink salmon are beginning to show in greater numbers sometimes making it a little difficult to get down to the deeper waters. Coho are still very much in evidence, averaging about 10lb. Although the 150+lb Halibut have been hard to find off the west coast, the “chickens” (10-45lb) are very findable east off Cohoe Point and Pillar Rock. Gunia Point has been producing well all season and even when the normally reliable Cohoe Point slows, Gunia keeps producing. Some of the guides have been switching to spoons and plugs with the appearance of the pinks but the majority are still working with herring.

The weather, although overcast, has been fairly dry and winds have been calm and out of the west for the last week.

What a trip!! 48 guests and 51 tyee. The Chinook were everywhere but particularly at Boulder Bay and Gunia Point with Cohoe Point not far behind. But let’s get back to the big fish. Many multiple tyee were caught including:
• Martin Lapierre – 30lb, 31lb and 38lb
• Sean Woolsey – 35lb, 36lb, 41lb
• Tyler Hayden – 30lb, 30lb released, 31lb
• Wayne McBurney – 30lb, 30.5lb, 35lb, 36lb
• and finally Jack Gucker with 30lb, 31lb and this year’s biggest to date, 64lb released (Jack’s secret – “I never leave Boulder Bay”). Jack, by the way, received a specially engraved Islander MR2 mooching reel for releasing his big fish, courtesy of The West Coast Fishing Club.

Everyone enjoyed playing fish and even the weather cooperated – or at least the ocean did by remaining calm throughout. We’re looking forward to this next trip – did someone say 60 tyee!

P.S. You may recall last week that I mentioned a guest who’s four Chinook were all tyee (30, 31, 36 and 37lb). Well in the telling of the story I misspelled our guest’s name and he writes advising me that none of his friends believed it was him. So let me set the record straight, Tucson Arizona’s Joe Ezell did indeed catch 4 tyee!
