The ClubHouse Reports

Aug 10 - 13

Although the skies were a little grey (and a little wet for that matter) the fish continue to co-operate. Big Chinook are being caught along the whole east side of Langara, from McPherson Point down to Boulder Bay. From day to day the hot spot might vary but they’re out there and not shy about attacking the bait. Thirty-six tyee were caught and six tyee were caught and released including Leon Silverstein’s 49 lb trip topper. Leon chose as his Catch & Release Reward, James Sawyer’s limited edition print “Cheena Cycle”. Many of you know this print as it was specially commissioned by The West Coast Fishing Club to commemorate the release of a 40+ lb Chinook. Halibut were not forgotten this trip as Chris Hauck pulled up a 265 lb beauty seven miles off Cape Knox.

The weather forecast is calling for rain showers over the next few days but light winds and very calm seas making all of Langara’s water easily accessible.

Forty- two tyee is the headline for this report! Amazing numbers of large, healthy Chinook are showing up in Langara waters, with one day seemingly being outperformed by the next. Larger Coho are also appearing in the mix. The old favourite – Cohoe Point – is once again producing as expected but close behind is the area around McPherson Point. Gunia Point, slipping eastward into Boulder Bay, continues to produce big, big, Chinook. Getting back to our “headline”, 42 tyee were reported on this trip, with Brent Buzard’s 51.5 pounder leading the way. And talking of tyee, Tucson Arizona’s Joe Enzell limited out his Chinook catch with 4 tyee – 30, 31, 36 and 37!

Waters remain calm and lake like but in true Queen Charlotte fashion, heads got fairly wet on a couple of days.

This trip opened with sunshine and closed with sunshine but in between a little rain did fall. The rain didn’t stop the fishing though, with this trip carrying on the tradition of the previous – good size Chinook and Coho. Twenty five of the over 250 Chinook either retained or released were tyee with both Sherry Carbary’s and Martin Louw’s 40 lb Spring salmon leading the way. Both of these beauties were caught on cut and plug herring along Langara’s east side. Sherry had another great story to tell. Friday afternoon her 22’ Boston Whaler was gently nudged onto a 30 degree angle and then softly set back down in the water by a large humpback whale that had been frolicking around her boat. Sherry admitted to at first being a little frightened but than just simply amazed.

And amazed is what you’ll be when come up and join us at The Clubhouse!

The big news this trip – 26 tyee! The largest single trip, tyee total this year - Darrel Gillespie’s 52.5lb released Chinook topping the list. As his Catch & Release “reward”, Darrel chose acclaimed Haida artist, Tim Sawyer’s “Cheena Cycle” print.

McPherson to Coho Points and Gunia Point seemed to be where most boats ended up this past week – light winds and calm seas being ever present. Although a few Pink salmon have begun to appear, the majority of the catch remains Coho and Chinook. “Chicken” size halibut are being seen on the east side of the Island off Pillar Rock and Coho Point but a few in the 45-75lb range were caught off the western side of Langara.

The weather man is predicting some unsettled weather, fortunately mostly in the form of rain. Light winds and calm seas continue in the forecast.

July 27 - 30

Calm waters and good weather favoured us this past trip and look to continue for the next several days. Although Coho are abundant and make you fight to get down to the Chinook – they didn’t prevent several good sized Chinook being hooked including Shane Van Vliet’s 54.5lb beauty. Very nice halibut are being found in about 250 feet of water east off Cohoe Point and Pillar Rock. Although changeover day can be a little sad – after all no one wants to leave Langara Island – today’s departure was more than satisfactory for three guests who caught tyee within minutes of getting on the water (especially for Glenn Van Vliet who caught a fabulous 45 pounder).

I’ve just finished orientation for our next group of guests and watched 53 smiling faces hop on the Hummer and drive down to the docks – wonder what stories they’ll come home with tonight?
