The ClubHouse Reports

July 23 - 27, 2006

Cohoe Point has come back to life! Both 8 to 12lb Coho and 17 to 24lb Chinook are present throughout most tides at Langara Island’s favourite spot. Brian Nixon’s 44.5lb Chinook lead the list of 18 tyee caught by our guests on this trip. Many of these big ones are found off Gunia Point. Orcas visited Cohoe Point Sunday morning, slowing fishing – we’ll have to see what Sunday afternoon brings for our next guests.

The weather continued to shine – sun, a little early morning fog and calm seas welcomed guests every morning.

July 20 - 23, 2006

Kevin Bechter’s 45 lb tyee headed up the list of 18 30+lb Chinook caught on this trip. Coho continue to be plentiful along the east side of Langara and the north end of Graham Island. We carry on finding good size halibut east of Langara off Cohoe Point and Pillar Rock. In spite of the persistent coho, guides find herring still the best offering.

The good weather just doesn’t give up. Seas are extremely calm – almost lake like and winds remain still.

July 16 - 20, 2006

Fine weather and good fishing continues to be the rule of order on Langara Island. The Coho have arrived in strength and predominate in all waters. In spite of the insistence of the coho, several tyee were found, mainly in the Gunia Point – Pillar Bay area. A scene right out of National Geographic took place right off our docks in Henslung Cove. A small pod of Orcas attacked and feed off a Minke Whale early Monday afternoon. Orcas will only occasionally attack whales – at rare sight viewed by many of our guests right off our docks. The outlook is for more fine weather – next report July 24th

July 13 - 16, 2006

A Sun and Clouds and moderate sea showed throughout this whole trip, in fact the water was glass like both Friday and Saturday. A good bite was found from Bruin to Pillar Bay, producing numerous tyee. Milford Sorensen’s 50-pound beauty topped the trip but unlike the other big ones, was found at McPherson Point. Coho are becoming more and more in evidence, sometimes making it difficult to get the herring down deep enough for the big Chinooks. Halibut has been good both out west in the Ozone as well as east off Cohoe Point. Weather forecasts are predicting warm sunny weather over the next few days. See you up at The Clubhouse soon.

July 9 - 13, 2006

Fishing moderated for a couple of days after last weeks big storm but began coming back over the past two or three days. This trip produced twelve tyee including Lance McNabb’s 40lb, Richard Napowanez’s 42lb, Bruce Langereis 44lb and Jim Humphries’ trip leading 49lb Chinook. The usual hot spot at Cohoe Point has moved over to Gunia Point the past few trips with most of the larger fish being caught around the corner in Bruin Bay. In Bruin, cut and plug herring at 11pulls seems to be the preferred approach.

Weather has remained pretty nice with mild winds and calm seas predominating. The sea lions at Cohoe Point and around Coneehaw have stolen more than their fair share (their fair share being none!) but I guess even they have to eat. Orcas, humpbacks and the occasional grey appear daily while this year’s large gathering of Bald Eagles continues to amaze.

July 6 - 9, 2006

The strongest storm of the year visited Langara Friday night bringing Storm Force 60 winds from the south and 4-meter seas. In spite of the rather rocky going, guests where still able to find a spot away from the heavy seas and drop a line. Three 40lb+ Chinook were boated - topped by Mary Jo Ollom’s released 48lb beauty.

We like to think we’re pretty flexible in accommodating our guest’s wishes but Brian Grange and our Vancouver crew went over the top on Sunday, delaying our flights so that guests could enjoy Italy’s World Cup victory over France at the new Haida Bucks Lounge located at the Masset airport. The entire crew was on hand to greet our guests when they arrived in Vancouver and shuttle them onto their connecting flights. As we welcomed our newly arriving guests, the sun broke out and the blue skies returned. Life is definitely beautiful on Langara Island.
