The ClubHouse Reports
July 2 - 6, 2006
Fine weather and good fishing! That continues to be life on Langara Island. Chinook and coho are present along the entire east coast or in other words – “fishing as usual”. Ralph Feinstein’s and Ted Horton’s 40 lb kings led the list of 18 tyee brought to the boats on this trip. All of these were “almost” surpassed by Randy Eresman’s 25-ton humpback whale! Randy, John Terry and long time guide Pat Simmons were traveling east to Shag Rock, when, less than 25 yards ahead their Humpy breached, showering them with hundreds of litres of water. Thank goodness for those unsinkable Boston Whalers (and a good bilge pump!).
The weatherman is predicting a break in the high pressure that has dominated the Queen Charlottes the past few days but until than, we’re all laying back and enjoying the wonderful sunshine.

Fishing continues to be good with the afternoon tide showing best results. Strong North West winds with seas to 2 meters has made the west side of Langara a challenge for some but Cohoe Point to Andrews remain very fishable. We are still experiencing a good bite around the Cabbage Patch.
Chinook are averaging 18 to 24 lb but the big tyee have remained allusive during this trip. Coho are starting to show up in greater numbers with an average weight of 8 lb.
Other than the strong winds, the weather has been absolutely perfect - sunny blue skies with temperatures in the high teens to low twenties (68° to 70°F).

Fishing continues to improve with many 18 to 25 lb Chinook appearing at Andrews, McPherson and Cohoe Points. The big Boston Whalers are making short time of getting to the Cabbage Patch and Green Point Green when things slow on the east side. Our herring (some of the best bait we’ve had in years) is still the bait of choice. Guest Peter Dickson and Bruce Keltie guessed that they released 70 to 80 spring salmon this trip – all of this while observing the great shows being put on by the Orcas and hump backs.
A stationary high pressure has created some spectacular weather – sunny and warm accompanied by moderate winds.

The fishing this trip put a smile on most everyone’s face. Not only did the weather co-operate and allow for some West Coast halibut fishing, but also the tide changes showed for at times an unbelievable salmon fishery. In total there were 18 Tyees boated with Jana Marsik’s 48lbs Chinook topping the scales. The morning tide change on the north end of Graham Island produced the fish with Boulder bay and Guinia point proving to be the spot. The bite came on a couple of times at Green Point, as the fleet quickly honed in on the fish in a matter of minutes. If fish were not being caught on the east side of Langara Island at Cohoe Point and Andrews, then the West Side near Lacy and the Lighthouse proved to be the place to be with plenty of bait at all depths.
When not salmon fishing, the waters were so calm, that anglers had access to all the secret halibut holes. There were 4 fish over 100lbs with the largest halibut weighing in at 275 LBS followed closely by a 183 LBS, 147 LBS and 107LBS.
Overall the weather was decent with very little wind. Morning fog was present with occasional rainy periods. Seems that all the planets were in line allowing for yet another wonderful trip to the Clubhouse at Langara Island.

Fishing has begun to pick up these past few days with reasonable catches being found at Andrews and McPherson Points. The electric downriggers have shown their strength both on our guided and self-guided fleet by allowing us to continually and quickly change depths. Cut and plug herring is outperforming plugs and lures at all depths.
The weather has been moderate with only light winds and the occasional shower. We are anxiously waiting to see if the fishery will continue to improve as we move towards July.
