The ClubHouse Reports

June 15 - 18, 2006

A little sun, some gray skies, a touch of rain and don’t forget a bit of wind. Typical Queen Charlotte weather!

Yesterday saw a very good morning bite and above an average bite in the afternoon. Cohoe Point up to McPherson has been slowly improving and when a bite is on, even as far away as Green Point, The Boston Whalers are firing up their 200hp Mercury’s and getting onto the spot first! North Island Lodge’s big fish lead the way this past trip but The Clubhouse guests weren’t far off, bringing in a total of 13 tyee.

Although the five-day weather forecast is showing some showers, winds a predicted to be light, which will lead to some pretty comfortable fishing.

June 11 - 15, 2006

Sunday and Monday produced some thick maritime fog but the last two days have been warm and dazzlingly sunny – don’t forget to stop at the Candy Counter and put that sunscreen on!

More fish are being caught off the downriggers but occasionally the weighted line off the stern produces results. Cut and plug herring continues to appeal the most.

Hump backs and some transient Orcas have been entertaining us for the past couple of days and the sunny weather has prompted a few to visit the ancient site of Kiusta and than take the short hike over to fabulous Lipas Bay with it’s pristine mile long white sandy beach.

Weather the past three days has been fantastic. Sunny, warm, calm winds and seas – what else could you ask for. Well I guess lots of fish but unfortunately that hasn’t been the case. Lighthouse to Lacy continues to show results but fishing has been difficult up the entire east side. Chinook are coming in streaks and you’ve got to be ready when they strike – it maybe a while before the next one.

A small pod of Orcas has been visiting the past couple of days, eagles are foraging and feeding their chicks and the views from the Clubhouse deck are spectacular – all in all it’s a great place to be!

June 4 - 8, 2006

Fishing is improving daily. It’s still a little scratchy on the east side of the island but there are Spring salmon out there and some good sizes as well. Several 40-pound Chinooks have shown up along with eight other tyee, most found between the Lighthouse and Lacy Island. Cut-plug herring on downriggers are what’s producing best. Weighted rods just aren’t getting deep enough to find the bigger ones at this time. Good size halibut continue round out this improving fishery. The commercial fishery opened today but Langara Island is protected by a one-mile limitation on commercial boats.

June 1 - 4, 2006

Fishing has been adventuresome over the past few days. High seas, and lots of competition (seals and Orcas) have challenged the best of anglers. Nine tyee including Don Frame’s and Nick Conver’s trip high 33lb springs were brought to the dock.

The strong south-easterlies promoted active fishing between the Lighthouse and Lacy Island. The usual hot spots – Cohoe Point to McPherson Point proved a little to lumpy for most.

A few coho are starting to appear but Halibut and Springs are predominantly what is showing up on the dock.

May 28 - June 1, 2006

Bob Young’s 43lb spring salmon and Rick Pick’s 208lb Halibut lead the charge on our May ending trip. Nine others joined Bob in receiving one of the West Coast Fishing Clubs new tyee pins.

Cut and plug herring is the bait of choice at the moment. Most of the larger salmon are being found between Andrews and McPherson Points. Both hump back and Killer whales are showing up regularly and the Bald eagles are noticeably more active than in the past couple of years. The seas have been fairly steady 2-3 metre swells with winds predominately out of the south-east for much of the trip. This has made for lumpy fishing along the entire east coast of the island.

Reports of large bait balls slightly to the north of Langara Island are a very encouraging sign of things to come.
