The ClubHouse Reports
July 6-8, 2008
Finally some good news from Langara Island and the Clubhouse, a few larger chinooks are showing and the fishing has picked up. Seems like ages since I felt the excitement around the docks, and the tales of big chinook are being told everywhere. The other good news is the coho are starting to show, so we are all a little busier out there.
Coho point seems to be happening for most of the guided boats, some good fishing taking place shallow, 40 to 60 feet deep along the wall, while other guides fishing the trench, 80 to 110 feet on the riggers. The pinks are crazy at times and some guides have been having luck trolling the infamous 602 plugs deep, other guides preferring superior spoons trolling 2 mph or a little faster. When the pinks settle down the bait fishing is preferred. Some guides are jigging fresh herring when possible and this bait is working. More bait is around then earlier in the season which is great news.
This current trip is half way through and we have some large fish to report. On Sunday the 6th a 48 lb tyee was landed by Adam Bernal up at Macpherson Point. This monster was coached by Scott Baker. A 42 lb tyee was caught the same afternoon by Terry Fretz, all the way from Montreal. Brendan found this fish with Terry at Gunia Point, always a good idea to spend some time in this area, well done guys. Mark Simpson fishing with This is Ian Barber his radio call name, grabbed a 39.5 at Coho point tonight, 6 30 pm last pass dragging 105 feet on the rigger. Nice ending to the day guys. Jennifer Morton was crazy excited with her 37 lber at Coho point, assisted by Peter Annets, great start to the trip. Greg Cust snuck a 35 lb fish in today as well, so yes some tyees are now here!
The general feeling is the fishing has picked up and with coho showing as well, we should be into some better days ahead. With our friends at North Island sneaking a 51 lb fish in this afternoon it is safe to say, large chinooks are showing. This is the time to treat every chinook hit with care, as one never knows how big a fish is actually on the line until a visual confirmation takes place. I have had fish in the 50,s not release from the downrigger clip and sure am shocked to see a giant chinook still green and powerful explode at the side of the boat. Always good to be on your game when these monsters are around.
Earlier in the week a 150 lb halibut was released by Bruce Mcadam fishing with Pierre. When the weather co operates the fishing has been good and the 25 to 50 lb eating size halis are available. The strong south west winds ruin these plans as th swells are huge but most trips there is a window to get out and pound bottom. Bud ,Pierre, and Pat are the guys who dominate this fishery.
Well looks like a great day tomorrow and time for all the guides to get to bed as the days are busy. With all species of salmon now here it is a action packed fishery you will all enjoy. We cant wait to get you out there to show you this fishery and this beautiful area. on behalf of the guides see you
soon.
See you soon!
