The ClubHouse Reports
June 26-29, 2008
Hello again from the Clubhouse guides at Langara. Believe it or not its flat calm, zero wind, and sunny clear skies! Actually hot! Sunburned guides trolled by me all day, Kory looked like a lighthouse beacon he was so red, although Bud was hiding from the sun in his cuddy, two jackets and three sweaters on, looking quite contented.
Thank goodness for the weather as chinook fishing is spotty, slow, and a grind at present. Halibut fishing is picking up and some great fishing with easy conditions for a week has been a bonus. June 29th, long time guest Hugh Owen fishing with his grandson James reeled in a 124 lb hali among a nice mix of smaller halis. I was told the boat had two fish over 100 lbs! Mark Bemister always does well out west and limited out on halis including a 54 lb fish.
The salmon fishing was decent for a 24 hour period but slowed down the last full day of the trip. Long time friend and guest Mike Throne was fishing with his son John and myself for the trip. We had some success with our largest chinook coming out of McPherson Point at 34 lbs. We made two passes at the end of the day and grabbed two chinook, then bailed as the weather was hideous, pouring rain all day, and cold. I was soaked and young John’s teeth were actually chattering. We had good fishing on the ebb at Gunia Point off the triangle, grabbing a 28 lb chinook with the candy boat rafted to us, 21 pulls on a tiny cut plug. At the bottom of the ebb we took four chinook, releasing a 27, 24, and a couple high teens.
Mike Kruczynski fished with Kory Fletcher for the trip and they had some luck at Andrews Point , taking a 37 lb fish on their first pass of the day. Brendan Hodge guided Rick Noonan into a 33 lb fish at Cohoe point , fishing 51 feet on the rigger. Sid Graham coached Chuck Schubert into a lighthouse tyee of 33lbs. The fish of the trip was taken by Tamara Nelson, a monster 47.5 lb chinook, taken out of Seath Point offshore, coached by Dion York, well done! Dion was on the bag pipes after that fish. He plays them up at the Penthouse in the evening, I thought he was going to blow out my window, what a set of pipes.
Chinook fishing remained slower today, top fish at the club was 35 lbs taken by John Lucas. There are heaps of pinks here to keep you busy, when the pinks start biting it’s crazy. The best solution is to move locations or fish spoons or plugs off the rigger. Some guides buzz around with teaser heads and have a bit more luck avoiding pinks. All areas are producing some chinook, nothing real consistent. Lacy island has pumped out a couple nice tyees, Ian Barbour snuck a 37 lb fish in on the 29th of June after a quick morning fish. Boulder Bay and the Reef are also kicking out fish, as is good old Cohoe Point and Andrews. The weather is so nice we are spread all around trying to locate reasonable numbers of chinook. Lots of bait is in the area, as of late needlefish stacked up in the shallows off Boulder, the Reef, and the east side of Langara.
As we move into July we are expecting chinook fishing to improve, with all this bait around some fish should be moving in and holding as is the usual pattern here at Langara. We look forward to seeing you all and for those coming up we are excited to getting you out on the water and into some great fishing.
See you soon!
