The ClubHouse Reports
May 26 - June 4, 2008
A big hello and welcome to another season of fishing at Langara Island in the beautiful Queen Charlottes. The Clubhouse opened its doors to our first guests, on May 26th and we look forward to showing you all a great time and getting everyone out fishing.
Our fleet of boats big Boston Whalers never looked better, with the new four stroke Mercury power on all our big Whalers. Lots of hard work preseason by our team of mechanics has resulted in a beautiful fleet of boats we are all proud of. One new addition is the 29 footer, a comfortable boat for sure.
Our first trip, the 26th to 29th produced four tyees, and the large fish of the trip was 37 lbs, caught by Brian Grange, assisted and heavily coached by guide Kuiama. They took the fish off Cohoe Point, close in to the beach, 12 pulls on a tiny cut plug. Pat Simmons coached Stewart Mclaren of the Keyscan group into a 36 lber and a 30, late in the afternoon between Lacy Island and Mutton Bay. Pat had that saunter on as he walked his fish up the dock, and it was good to see some nice sized fish in the area. Kory Fletcher snuck a 34 lb spring into the fish pit, caught by Tim Mclean and Barry Widas.
The trip saw lots of sea lions in the area, or as Pat Simmons.....{aka Cat Stevens, his radio call handle] calls them Rock Dogs. The Lions are ever present at Cohoe Point, and landing a fish was a challenge when the lions decide to create havoc. Lots of fish nailed at the boat and guides have had the dummy flashers hit as well, as sea lions are taking bait right off the hooks! We are seeing lions in all locations this year and are hoping they move on as they usually do. Over the years I notice they leave us alone as the season progresses and we have fish holding in more areas.
May 29th to June 1 saw more tyees and a little more chinook action. I fished the Lacy area with success and took three tyee and some nice mid twenties fishing shallow with the tiny cut plugs. Most guides were not fishing deeper than 60 feet on the cable. I saw Kory Fletcher, Pat Simmons, Pierre, Ian Barber, and Bud Stafford all with tyees and very happy guests. Most of the big tyees were Lacy fish, but Pierre found his off the Lighthouse, and Ian scraped his off McPherson. The weather was awesome, no wind and lots of sun! Fishing was on the slower side for springs, with guests and guides taking advantage of every strike. The common thread was shallow and small herring. When you hooked up the fish were better in size on the outside , with lots mid twenties being the average size.
June 2 was our first big south east gale and we all huddled behind Lacy island bucking a hideous chop and 35 knots of wind, good times haha! Not many fish were hit in the am, and in the pm we hit a few smaller springs in the teens. You really appreciate the Clubhouse and all it has to offer, and yes game five of the Pittsburgh-Detroit series was awesome.
Today was calm and our day to pound ground. Headed out for halibut with fellow guides Pat, Bud, Kory, Pierre, Ian, Brendan, Jordan, gee almost everyone. I managed to scrape up a 74 lb halibut along with a couple chickens, guests Craig, Anthony, and Jason Lambert all had sore arms and big grins. Pat Simmons out did us of course, landing a pair of nineties for the Korsch group, Bud had a limit of 40 to 50 lbers for his guests and every boat had fish! Not a bad start to the halibut season. Reminder the limit is now 2 fish total on the halibut.
Sorry about the names I missed , I will pull it all together next report. To sum up chinook fishing started off well, but we are in a lull waiting for a push of fish. A 49 lb chinook has been taken by a fellow lodge angler so one always has to treat every bite with respect, and patience. The guides are working hard to find Chinook.. On behalf of all the guides we can not wait to show you this area, and guide you all into some fish and a incredible experience, see you all soon.
Screamer, Mike Tonnesen
