North Island Lodge Reports

June 27-30, 2008

This trip we welcomed a few new faces traveling with another long time guest Nick Simon, as well as a host of other familiar faces. They came to experience the best of what the west coast has to offer after a night in Vancouver and a rafting trip,  it was time to do a little fishing. The pinks seemed to move in thick and a few of the guides were forced to come up with a new game plan….quick. Some toughed it out emptying a bait cooler faster than a fishing guides bank account in the fall. Others tried the big plugs and spoons working the usual spots at the 100ft mark. Whatever the technique, the Chinook were tough to find but some nice fish were caught. Several fish in the twenties were hit along with a couple of Tyee including Orville Crigler’s 33lber and Waylon Samuels 30.

There was also another close encounter with the bear of the sea. Mark Hodge and Robert Mueller fishing the backside of Andrews landed a very nice fish. After a couple of photos and measurements they eased the fish back into the water trying to raise a guide on the radio for verification. Sitting in a catch and release net the big fish seemed quite content, that is until a rather large sea lion decided he couldn’t pass up that kind of offering. Mark and Robert were left white knuckled and one net shy after a quick tug of war with the lion. The fish measured in the high 50’s…Gentleman, take comfort in the fact you’ll have a great story to tell the grandchildren
