The Outpost Reports

July 28 – August 1, 2008

Five minutes from our dock there is an area known as “The Gap”. And when we can’t get out on the ocean due to bad weather this “Gap” has been a very popular spot for catching large Chinook. Twelve – year old Mia Angus discovered the magic of “The Gap” on the first day of the Henderson, Hart, Carr, Angus and Robertson trip. Mia hooked into a 35 lb Tyee in 60 feet of water using a flasher with white hoochie. Young Mia, coached by guide Quinn (Al Pacino) Lowen, was exhausted but after an epic 20 minute battle she caught her very first Tyee….congratulations Mia Angus!

Mia’s Tyee was the start to one of the best trips of the season. Coached by guide Steve (The Log) Cote, Randy and Pamela Henderson hooked into a 30 lb Chinook and a pair of 39 lb Chinook at “The Gap” in 60 feet of water on cut plugs and a coyote spoon. Pamela also caught the largest Hali of the trip when she hauled in 104 lb and 120 lb monsters….great husband, wife and guide teamwork!

Gale force winds and pounding rain did not deter Marilyn Hart from hooking her Tyee in another area five minutes from the dock known as “Tyee Bay”. The sound of Marilyn’s screaming Islander Reel was the first indication something big was on her line. With the rod fully bent the salmon went straight down below the boat and the rod’s farrell was about to break. Coached by guide Kevin (Kermode) Sturgess, Marilyn’s husband Greg grabbed the wheel of the boat as Kevin held onto the tip of the rod and Marilyn clutched the butt of the rod. The dynamic threesome worked together as a team and managed to catch a 36 lb Tyee in 40 feet of water on a 6 inch spoon….unbelievable teamwork folks!

This group caught a total of 36 Chinook ranging from 15 to 36 lbs….Greg Hart – 28 lbs, Betty Carr – 29 lbs, Mia Angus - 28 lbs, Katsuko Angus – 26 lbs, Murray Rotbert – 28 lbs, Allan Rotbert – 26 lbs. Betty Carr tied a new season high record for Coho when she caught her 12 lb Coho. The Coho are starting to appear on a daily basis and they are all in the 8 to 12 lb range….great trip everyone…have a wonderful summer!
