The Outpost Reports

july 14 – 18, 2008

The Sun Valley Exclusive group of guests experienced the Charlottes in all her glory. Rain, gale force winds, huge swells, choppy seas, sunshine and calm seas prevailed during this trip. But this hardy group of professionals was thrilled to be in this pristine environment so everyone enjoyed themselves immensely.

Gary Dittmer had a front row seat for his version of Jaws when after a 2 hour battle with what he thought was a huge Chinook appeared a 180 pound Salmon Shark. Coached by guide Steve (The Log) Cote, the epic battle included 2 runs of 300 feet straight down before the shark finally broke the line. The Steven Spielberg Special was caught off of Selveson on a cut plug in 50 feet of water…..that was close encounters of the first kind Gary!

Isaak Funk, coached by guide Brent (Cat Scratch – Barney – Boat Four) Maracle, caught the largest Chinook of the trip. Isaak hooked his 41 lb Tyee at Louie Rock in 69 feet of water. Russ Hobbs, coached by Kevin (Kermode) Sturgess, landed a 33 lb Chinook at Wash Rock using a 6” spoon in 62 feet of water. Tyee pins were also awarded to Stuart Laidman – 32 lbs, Todd Sund – 31 lbs, Ron Heath – 31 lbs, Trevor Samulski – 30 lbs, and Severin Samulski – 30 lbs.

Milan (Davy Cricket) Wejr and I would also like to thank Severin and Ron for joining us for an adventurous hike through the rain forest over to Glass Ball Beach. We were thrilled to see a small Black Bear on the beach, a Humpback Whale breaching in the ocean, a Sitka Deer grazing in the grass and a rare elusive Martin barking at us from high above in a spruce tree…have a great summer gentlemen…see you soon!
