Here we go, another fishing report from the Clubhouse, situated here on Langara Island. The weather has finally broken, the wind has let up, and the torrential rains have vanished as of 11 a.m. this morning. We took a beat down for three straight days, but things have greatly improved.
Fishing is very good at this time. Tyees are being caught and released, and chinook fishing is where it’s at right now. The coho fishing is slow currently, but the 80 to 90 cm halibut are biting for sure when weather permits.
We had a big first week of August in here and it is continuing on. Some highlights include Rance and his gang fishing the Bowl out west with myself and a fleet of Clubhouse boats. Tacking up and down the wall, August 5 was our moment to shine.
Known by Tom and James, his fishing partners, as "The Legend," Rance was sitting next to the port rod. As we passed the hot corner next to the kelp - a huge boil and a screaming hookup. This was the big one for sure. Could it be a dreaded shark? Plenty around... hope not. As we hit reverse to get on top of the fish and weave through the boats, a quick-thinking Isaac pulled all his gear and cleared out the way. That’s the way to work together - great job right there. After a long while, we started to believe it really could be a shark. Was I seeing things? Were my guests seeing something I was not? Was that a large tail or a shark fin?
Rance worked the fish to the boat and at first, I thought we had a 70 lber, lol. A huge hatchery fish was expertly brought to my net. A big scoop and into the live tank - this was a monster chinook. We took the fish over to Austin, who was close by and has a real camera, for a couple of pictures. Thanks, Austin and Mike Brown, for the camera work.
This fish was an armful for sure, and we slipped this hatchery monster quickly back into the water and watched it bolt away to the kelp. 50 lbs - pretty happy with that one, been awhile, lol. These come along rarely for a guide, and all the guides get revved up when they get a shot at a monster chinook.
The trip was a very good one in here. The Clubhouse recorded 13 tyee for the four-day trip. Austin guided Mike to two that I know of. Korey had three tyee on the trip. Jacob grabbed an offshore 35 lber. Arron and his group, I heard, had a 39 up top of the island. Bud had a two-tyee trip with his guests in the Bowl. There were others, but those come to mind.
Tom Reddy had a 32 lber the very next pass after we released the 50 lber, pictured below.
A long, skinnier version but beautiful - and released!
Chris Spafford passed along a very special set of pictures to Brent, his guide of choice always. Chris has an amazing eye for wildlife photography, and this picture of my favorite eagle being harassed by an oyster catcher will be blown up and on my wall if he allows, lol. Thanks so much, Chris, and your camera, and your lens, lol.
Lots of fish, check. Lots of chinook, check. This is the time to think about spending a portion of your day on shorelines. If that is not working out, think offshore, Jalen, where there are plenty of bites. As mentioned, the coho fishing has slowed, the chinook have not. At the moment, chinooks 16 to 24 lbs are abundant. Off Coho Point, all depths seem to work. If the lions are causing issues for you, move out offshore a bit and things settle down for sure. Brent has done well right off the pin, holding in the tide and producing great fish including a 38 lber. The Molnar group did well in this area as well - 55 feet off the rigger and pulling in fish like Hans, pictured below.
Brent and his 38 lb release from Coho Point pictured below. Wow, on fire!
Many more fish and stories, and just in tonight, another monster just released by Korey out west. The story will be told next report, I promise. For now, Lucy the lab and myself have a 10 p.m. curfew - bed time. So until next time,
Goodnight from the CLUBHOUSE,
Mike Tonnesen, Head Guide
and of course, Lucy, Head Dog
