CH Report: From Kelp to Deep Water – Friday, June 13

June 13, 2025

A windy northwest day here today, a reminder that it’s not quite summer yet at Langara. Three shirts, two jackets, and long underwear were the order of the day for me out on the chuck this morning. Dress in layers—many layers, lol.

Fishing has been up and down over the first ten days of June. Most of the action has been on the east side of Langara: Boulder Bay, Cohoe Point, and up into Andrews Point. In Boulder Bay, fishing in 30 to 40 feet of water, the results have been great some days, while other days the fish are off the bite. A crowd of boats always seems to be present. You’ll likely spot the fleet as you fly past Graham Island on your way to The Clubhouse.

There seems to be a mix in size when it comes to the Chinook. Most are in the 10 to 13 lb range, some between 13 and 18 lbs, and a few hitting 20 to 28 lbs. Boulder Bay is a place to slowly tack through, back and forth, patiently working along the kelp and into the deeper part of the bay. Just when you think there’s nothing there, the fish show up and several boats hook up at once. Game on.

27lb Chinook caught by the Sousa group, guided by Screamer and Lucy.

At ANDREWS and COHOE, most of the fish are sitting 40 to 60 feet down, although some are hugging the bottom at 80 to 120 feet. A downrigger is essential here, letting you get close to the bottom quickly and efficiently, which makes it easier to pick up both Chinook and halibut. The top fish of the trip was a 28-pounder, caught here on Monday. Several boats landed fish in the low to mid-twenties, including DJ on spoons and Austin on bait. Pete also chipped in with a low twenty. Herring are just arriving now, and a few humpback whales are in the area feeding. And of course, there are eagles everywhere—especially around Cohoe Point.

Another nice fish for the Sousa group.

I’ve included some photos from recent trips showing a bit of the success Lucy and myself had guiding in the Boulder Bay Area. Lucy has been watching the rods carefully and providing support for every hookup, as well as cleaning all the fish upon landing. Never gets old.

Dyane Legge and her early season chinook.

Ok, time to conclude here, stay tuned, and see you all soon,

Goodnight from The Clubhouse,
Mike Tonnesen, Head Guide
