HELLO again from The Clubhouse here on Langara Island, where the weather has officially turned to summer. Calm seas and hot days are now the new normal. Fishing has been very good, both for Chinook and halibut when the weather permits on the west side.
As we say goodbye to August, we can reflect on strong Chinook fishing that proved consistent for both numbers and size. The Highway was on fire mid-August on the flood tide, 90 to 150 feet on the downrigger. Bigger Chinook showed up as well, some at 30 lbs, some just shy of the mark, and many in the 17 to 25 lb range.
The Cohoe Point area is once again alive, with many Chinook holding in 180 to 250 feet of water. Paul has found plenty of mid-twenties fish 70 to 90 feet off the downrigger in this area. The dummy flasher is key, attached to the cannonball. This setup allows you to enjoy more bites without extra hardware fixed to the mainline. Most of us are fishing this way now. I am also finding large Chinook as deep as 200 feet off Cohoe Point, right on the bottom. The mooching rods are not effective at these depths for the most part.
Boulder Bay has also woken up in the Chinook department. There have been consistent schools of Chinook on the ebb tide, especially in the mornings. Here we are picking up fish in the high teens to 29 lbs. Sometimes lots, other times it is a bit of a waiting game.
The west side bite for Chinook appears to be over. The Bowl has been silent, and Lacy and Shark Fin are also quiet for Chinook. However, halibut fishing is very good if the north winds let up, with many halibut in the 80 to 102 cm range being landed.
I have included a few pictures from the past couple of weeks in this report.
Below is Tony with his large Highway Chinook, 29 lbs, hit at 125 feet.
Next we have Tony and Dawn. Dawn with her first-ever fish caught. Great job, Dawn!
David always manages a nice Chinook when fishing up here at Langara. He has been a veteran at The Clubhouse for many years.
David’s mid-twenties fish was caught deep off Shark Fin.
Johan Levin certainly knows how to hold a Chinook. This one was a mid-twenties from Boulder, 43 feet off the downrigger.
The Levin group also did well on the halibut, scoring a max-length specimen at 102 cm, pictured below.
A big thank you to the crew of guides that headed out this trip: rising star Jacob off to school, Dave off to his next adventure, and Tegan and Chantel, off to continue guiding for the fall on summer-run steelhead up the Skeena River system. A great crew of guides makes for a fantastic experience for everyone here at The Clubhouse.
And of course, a thank you to Lucy, who brightens the docks and entertains the guests, calls in the eagles for viewing, and is overall great company on Boat 4.
Here comes September. The weather looks awesome, the Chinook are here, and all the makings are in place for a great couple of weeks to finish off strong. Thank you for supporting us, and here is to many more great adventures here on Langara Island and at The Clubhouse.
Goodnight from The Clubhouse,
Mike Tonnesen
Head Guide, Screamer, and of course, LUCY
