Rethinking Peak Season: June & September Fishing in Haida Gwaii

July 16, 2025

Think July and August are the only prime fishing months? Think again.

Many anglers overlook June and September when planning their Haida Gwaii trips, assuming that July and August deliver the best action and experience.

But June and September offer good weather conditions and some of the best fishing runs of the season, not to mention some of the most exclusive culinary events.

They offer everything from early Chinook and Coho runs to late-season action, longer fishing hours, and unique lodge experiences that make these months a hidden gem for serious (and curious) anglers.

What to Know Before You Book

Why June & September Are a Dream for Anglers

Fewer Guests, More Serenity

June and September fall just outside the peak travel months, which means fewer boats on the water and more space to explore.

Lodges host smaller groups during these seasons, offering a quieter, more intimate experience both on land and at sea.

It’s perfect for couples, families, and those who appreciate good weather, good fishing and a world class wilderness experience.

Early & Late Season Runs Mean Action

Don’t let the calendar fool you. Some of the strongest fishing happens at the bookends of the season.

  • In June, early runs of Chinook and Coho arrive to gorge on the schools of herring and needlefish, making for high-energy action right from the start.
  • In September, late-season Chinook are mature and powerful, while Coho are in peak numbers and size. Less pressure on the water also means fish are more responsive, with plenty of opportunities for prime fishing.

Longer Days, More Time on the Water

June gives you the longest days of the year, more daylight means extended fishing time and the ability to cover more ground.

Whether you want to explore multiple fishing areas, chase tide shifts, or simply catch the sunset, the early season delivers more hours to make it all happen.

Culinary Experiences You Won’t Want to Miss

Haida Gwaii isn’t just for anglers - it’s also a destination for culinary adventures.

Key Fish Species For Each Month

Fishing in Haida Gwaii is unmatched year-round, but June and September each bring out their own standout species and partners.

Whether you’re chasing early-season runs or looking for late-season heavyweights, here’s what to expect on the water.

June:

  • Chinook Abundance: Early-run Chinook (King) Salmon are plentiful. June is a go-to month for trophy hunters.
  • Coho Runs Begin: Coho (Silver) Salmon start to appear by mid-June.
  • Halibut & Bottom Fish: Calm conditions make for excellent bottom fishing. Halibut, Lingcod, and a variety of rockfish are active this time of year.

September:

  • Late-season Chinook: These salmon are mature and ready to run. Their size and strength make for exciting fights and unforgettable final-season catches.
  • Peak Coho Fishing: September is prime time for Coho. They're bigger, more aggressive, and can be caught in volume.
  • Halibut & Lingcod Still Abundant: Bottom fishing remains productive through September, with fewer boats and steady activity for those seeking variety.
